Red Velvet Cupcakes
First thing’s first, red velvet is NOT CHERRIES. What is red velvet? What exactly is a red velvet cupcake and how do we explain its taste? Chocolatey? Vanilla? IMO red velvet is the umami of cupcakes – a taste which is rich, familiar yet unexplainable – to put it simply. There may be a lot of debates out there, but the conclusion is: red velvet recipes are essentially just originations from red coloured cakes. During World War II, Red coloured cake recipes were introduced by using beetroot juices. The enhanced colour not only served the purpose of making cakes more appealing, beets were also used as a filler and to…

‘I am Cakey’ Brownies
Hello hello! 🙂 Last week in my Fudge-tastic Brownies Recipe post, I clearly stated that I prefer fudgy over cakey brownies… on a normal day. However, today we are all about these cakey brownies and why they are the real winners in this competition. 4 Reasons why cakey brownies are better than fudgy brownies 1. Lower fat content Are we not guilty enough for skipping gym on Tuesday? Now cravings are hitting us like a train and there is nothing else we can think about besides a chocolate brownie! Fudge-tastic Brownies
I still remember the first cake that I ever baked – it was for mum’s birthday. The 12-year-old me really wanted to give something better than just another birthday card, but I had no experience in the kitchen then. I decided to try baking and made my very first cake – a simple pineapple cake (not brownies). It was literally just a butter cake with pineapple slices, baked on the bottom but inverted while served. The result was not perfect, but it was definitely a memorable one… Especially because my mother likes Pumpkins, not Pineapples… My mistake! 🙂 With that being said, the next 5 times I was in a…

Hangzhou-style Braised Pork Belly Recipe, 東坡肉 (Dōng Pō Ròu)
GONG XI FA CAI! 恭喜发财! I’ve decided to continue the Chinese recipes in lieu of Chinese New Year. If I were to bring a dish to a potluck party, this braised pork belly – Hangzhou style 東坡肉 – would be my signature dish. It is very special to me – proven to be successful in making friends (LOL). This dish has also earned me a decent boyfriend. Now his family refers to me as DPR, i.e. Dōng Pō Ròu – I kid you not, that’s what his grandmother called me last year. On the eve of the Chinese New Year, families gather (from near and far) for a reunion dinner.…

CNY Special: Pineapple Tarts (Nastar) Recipe
Pineapple tarts are no doubt one of the most popular Chinese New Year cookies. Similar to the Taiwanese pineapple pastry, pineapple tarts are jam-filled bite-sized pastries. These pastries are soft and the crust melts in your mouth, a delicate balance of savoury pastry with the sweet pineapple taste. The jam filling may be used as toppings on the pastry cookies, otherwise the pastry may fully enclose the jam fillings instead. Fun Fact: Pineapple tarts are also equivalent to Nastar, i.e. Nanas tart – which originates from Indonesia. There are so many great things about celebrating Chinese New Year. If I have to rank them, the top 5 reasons why Chinese…
